【英語ニュアンスの違い】「in spite of」と「despite」　違いと使い分け

「in spite of」と「despite」はどちらも、2つの考えや状況の対比や対立を示すために使われます。
これらはしばしば同じ意味で使われますが、用法には若干の違いがあります。

どちらも日本語の意味としては「にもかかわらず」とか「だけれども」という意味です。

今回はこの違いについてお話します。

in spite of

「in spite of」は少しフォーマルで、あまり一般的ではない表現方法です。
後ろには名詞や名詞句が続きます。
また、節の前に前置詞 “the”（すなわち、”in spite of the fact that”）とともに使われることもあります。

In spite of his fear of heights, he climbed to the top of the mountain.
高所恐怖症にもかかわらず、彼は山の頂上まで登った。

例文②
In spite of the rain, the outdoor wedding went ahead as planned.
雨にもかかわらず、野外結婚式は予定通り行われた。

In spite of the fact that she was ill, she completed the marathon.

despite

「despite」は、より一般的で汎用性の高い表現です。
名詞または動名詞（動詞＋-ing）が続くのが文の構成要素です。

例文④
Despite his fear of heights, he climbed to the top of the mountain.
高所恐怖症にもかかわらず、彼は山の頂上まで登った。

例文⑤
Despite the rain, the outdoor wedding went ahead as planned.
雨にもかかわらず、野外結婚式は予定通り行われた。

in spite that ～　の使い方は間違い

in spite that (主語＋述語)についてお話します。

I’m going swimming in spite that it is raining.

この文は文法的に正しくはありません。
「in spite that」という言い方はない、と考えてください。

in spiteという英語を使いたいのであれば、「in spite of」というのが正しい言い方になります。

例文⑦
I’m going swimming in spite of the fact that it is raining.

しかし、一般的な会話で「in spite of the fact」という言い方はしません。
この言い方はあまりに堅苦しい感じを与えます。

もし、「in spite of」を使って「雨だけど、泳ぎに行く」と言いたい場合は、

例文⑧
I’m going swimming in spite of the rain.

となります。
この文章で「in spite of」を「despite」と言い換えてももちろんOKです。
しかし、もっと一般的な言い方をするなら、

例文⑨
I’m going swimming even though it’s raining.

という言い方が会話で使う場合は多いと思います。
